BKS-Partners and iPEO Announce Joint Venture

Baldwin Krystyn Sherman Partners  and iPEO Solutions announced a joint venture agreement to form a boutique insurance and risk management practice focused on several industry verticals, including professional employer organizations (“PEO”), senior living, staffing, and private equity as well as businesses with complex risk issues.

The newly formed joint venture will capitalize on the risk management team already built by BKS-Partners, including senior risk engineers, claims professionals, senior account executives, actuarial and predictive modeling and a full marketing department. The combination of BKS-Partners’ extensive resources with the experience and expertise of Mike Ortoll and iPEO offers businesses an industry-leading platform for crafting custom risk management and insurance solutions.

BKS-Partners and iPEO use a consultative and holistic approach to risk management and insurance across a variety of industries, including private equity portfolio firms, associations, franchises, real estate/property management, healthcare, construction, hospitality and transportation.

The joint venture will operate under the BKS-Partners brand as an extension of current operations. Additionally, BKS-Partners will work with iPEO to provide clients with leading PEO solutions.

All Children’s Hospital Johns Hopkins Medicine Expands Children’s Heart Surgery Program

CaptureThe Johns Hopkins All Children’s Heart Institute has expanded its Johns Hopkins Children’s Heart Surgery program at All Children’s Hospital  with the addition of world-renowned pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon Tom Karl, M.S., M.D.

Dr. Karl joins All Children’s Hospital Johns Hopkins Medicine from the University of Queensland, Australia, where he served as professor of surgery and consultant cardiothoracic surgeon and director of research. His areas of surgical expertise include all aspects of pediatric and congenital cardiothoracic surgery and intensive care, including neonatal heart surgery, cardiopulmonary transplantation, circulatory support, valve surgery and repairs for complex adult congenital heart diseases. Dr. Karl also serves as an associate editor and editorial board member for Cardiology in the Young, the leading medical journal in the world dedicated to the care of patients with pediatric and congenital heart disease, along with editor-in-chief Jeffrey Jacobs who also works as a cardiothoracic surgeon at All Children’s Hospital. February 18: Saint Leo University Hosts Sixth Annual International Business Conference

The Sixth Annual International Business Conference (IBC) will begin the evening of Wednesday, February 18, and continue through Thursday and Friday, February 19 and 20. The public is invited to attend the keynote address by Democratic political strategist James Carville, “Current Politics in the Global Economy,” at 7 p.m., Wednesday, February 18, in the Greenfelder-Denlinger Boardrooms of the Student Community Center. Admission is free, but advance registration is advised at http://advance.saintleo.edu/carville.

Mr. Carville rose to national prominence with the successful 1992 campaign for then-presidential candidate Bill Clinton. Since then, he has worked in political campaigns abroad, and has continued to write in the United States and serve as a frequent television commentator. He also teaches at Tulane University.

Registration is required for the remainder of the conference, which has the theme “Best Practices in Global Organizations.” There will be professional and academic tracks, and while much of the focus will be on management practices of for-profit enterprises, the conference will also include presentations on nonprofit organizations and public administration topics. Featured speakers include Tampa attorney and mergers specialist Curt Creely, partner in Foley & Lardner LLP, and Deborah Wilkinson, executive director of the Tampa Bay Trade and Protocol Council. Faculty members from the Donald R. Tapia School of Business are organizing the conference.

Contract Furniture Hires New Director of Sales

yuContract Furniture, Inc. (CFI), a Tampa-based full service furniture dealership focused on workspace planning, commercial furniture sales, installation and warehousing, is pleased to announce the addition of Brian Wilson as director of sales.

Brian Wilson will lead the sales force and develop sales strategies to generate new business. He will manage and direct the sales staff including recruitment and training to achieve company goals and objectives.

Prior to his new position with Contract Furniture, Brian worked as a district manager for a leading manufacturer of contract furniture. In that role, he worked with architectural and design firms, the dealer community and end users to provide space planning and tailored solutions to meet any need. In the past 13 years, Brian has worked in sales at Arriscraft International, The Parksite Group, and Kohler. BKS-Partners Appoints Managing Advisor

PrintBaldwin Krystyn Sherman Partners (BKS-Partners), one of Florida’s largest privately held insurance brokerage firms, announced that Ben Guzzle has joined the firm as a Managing Advisor, adding even more talent to the risk management team. Ben joins BKS-Partners from Willis Group Holdings, the third largest global broker, where he served as a Senior Client Advocate for commercial and large corporate accounts.

In his new role, Ben is responsible for the successful acquisition, handling and retention of key property and casualty, employee benefits, surety and private risk management clients.

Ben served Bank of America in their commercial bank division for seven years and moved into insurance brokerage in 2001. He has resided in Tampa, Florida since 1994 and is an active member of the community, serving on the boards of The Straz Center, The Community Foundation of Tampa Bay as well as various other nonprofit committees. Ben attained his bachelor’s degree with majors in economics and political science from DePauw University.

Carlton Fields Jorden Burt Welcomes New Associate

Carlton Fields Jorden Burt is pleased to announce that Nicholas A. Brown has joined the firm as an associate in its Tampa office.

Brown is a member of the firm’s national Appellate Practice and Trial Support practice group. His practice will focus on trial support and appeals in state and federal court. He will assist with case assessments, researching and writing briefs, and oral argument preparation.

Previously, he served as a senior staff attorney to Judge Nelly N. Khouzam in the Second District Court of Appeal in Tampa. He is a frequent speaker on topics related to appellate law, ethics, professionalism, and legal career development.

Brown is a member of The Florida Bar. Additionally, he serves in a variety of roles on the University of South Florida Kosove Society Alumni Board.

He received his J.D. from the University of Florida Levin College of Law where he was a teaching assistant for the courses Legal Research & Writing and Appellate Advocacy. He received his B.A., magna cum laude, from the University of South Florida.

The ALS Association Florida Promotes Team Member to Regional Director of Development

Katie Cooper was promoted to Regional Director of Development at The ALS Association Florida Chapter.  In her new role, Katie is responsible for the fund development efforts, including the Walk to Defeat ALS and the Ride to Defeat ALS in Tampa, Southwest FL, Jacksonville and the Panhandle.  Katie can be reached at kcooper@alsafl.org.

melton-lgKristin Y. Melton has become a Shareholder with the Tampa law firm of de la Parte & Gilbert, P.A. Kristin practices primarily in the areas of administrative, environmental, water, government and sports law. She has been actively involved in a number of cases involving permitting issues, rule development, phosphate mining challenges, comprehensive plan challenges, and legislative and regulatory guidance, for a number of local governments across the state of Florida.

Melton joined the firm in 2007 after earning her J.D. from University of Florida.

Trenam Kemker President to Be Inducted Into 2015 Tampa Bay Business Hall of Fame

Thomas Howell Ferguson P.A. Congratulates Meagan Camp, CPA

??????????Thomas Howell Ferguson congratulates Meagan Camp on passing her Certified Public Accounting exam. She is now a fully licensed CPA in the state of Florida.

Meagan joined the Thomas Howell Ferguson team in 2011 after graduating from Valdosta State University magna cum laude, with bachelor’s degrees in accounting and finance. She was promoted to Senior in the Assurance Services Department in the fall of 2013. She has worked primarily with not-for-profit, pension, governmental, and insurance clients.  Her experience in these industries has helped her develop strong technical skills that have made her a valued resource to our clients.

Meagan is a member of the Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Beta Gamma Sigma National Honor Society, and the Sigma Alpha Pi Honor Society.

The Crisis Center of Tampa Bay announced that is has been named a finalist in two categories in the 2015 WEDU Be More Awards.
The Crisis Center’s “Drop an F-Bomb” human trafficking awareness campaign was nominated in the “Be More Informed” category, an award that recognizes the execution of creative and results-driven original marketing campaigns.

A Crisis Center video, “Ashley & Nicole’s Story”, was nominated in the “Be More Relevant” category, an award that recognizes when an organization creates a video that has the power to compel someone to seek services, volunteer time, or support an organization financially. Read more…
