All Children’s Hospital Johns Hopkins Medicine Announces Federal Grant Award, Patient Shopping Event and Booster Seat Giveaway
All Children’s Hospital Johns Hopkins Medicine will receive a $5.6 million grant for the St. Petersburg Healthy Start Federal Project as part of a collaborative effort with the Florida Department of Health in Pinellas County. The grant-funded program, sponsored by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Maternal and Child Health Bureau, Division of Healthy Start and Perinatal Services, is designed to improve health outcomes for women, infants and families in underserved populations, as well as reduce racial and ethnic disparities, and facilitate access to comprehensive health and social services. All Children’s Hospital Johns Hopkins Medicine patients with life-limiting illnesses will gear up for this year’s homecoming dance by searching for the perfect outfit. This weekend, school-age patients and their guests will search through hundreds of donated dresses, suits and accessories to find the perfect attire for All Children’s Hospital’s homecoming dance on October 11. Patients will be treated to a “personal shopper” who will help them try on outfits in a private dressing room, as if on an episode of “Say Yes to the Dress’. There will also be a photo booth, music and snacks to get patients, parents and their guests excited for the big day. Hundreds of employees and members of the community donated dresses, suits, shoes and other accessories for the event. View a list of other items and services that can be donated, including hair accessories, new makeup, salon services and corsages.
The Suncoast Safe Kids Coalition, led by All Children’s Hospital, and Maher Chevrolet are working together to distribute 60 booster seats to local families in preparation for a new booster seat law. Current Florida law requires children up to age three to be placed in a crash-tested, federally approved child restraint device. House Bill 225, which will take effect January 1, 2015, extends the law, requiring that children four and five years old be properly restrained in a booster seat. During the booster seat distribution event, the first 60 families to arrive at Maher Chevrolet will receive a free booster seat, as long as their child meets the recommended weight and height requirements of the seat. Staff members of the Suncoast Safe Kids Coalition led by All Children’s Hospital will be on hand to help families install the booster seats into vehicles, as well as provide advice on car seat safety. City of St. Petersburg councilman Steve Kornell, Representative Dwight Dudley and staffers from Senator Jeff Brandes’ office are also expected to attend the event.
