The Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce announced the winners of the 2013 Small Business of the Year Awards, presented by Sam’s Club at a ceremony on Friday, September 20, at the Tampa Convention Center. More than 800 attendees celebrated the accomplishments of Tampa Bay’s small business community and toasted the evening’s big winners.
This year’s event was presented by Sam’s Club and represents the 33rd year the Chamber has recognized this key segment of the region’s economy. Small business awards were presented in three categories based on the number of employees. This year marks the introduction of a fourth business category honoring a startup company. Companies are evaluated on financial success, community involvement and ethical business practices. An award was also presented to the Outstanding Small Business Leader of the Year.
The 2013 Small Business of the Year Award winners are:
Outstanding Leader: Bob Helms, Pegasus TransTech Corporation
Bob Helms is Chairman and CEO of Pegasus TransTech Corporation, a highly innovative technology company that helps customers go paperless with state-of-the-art electronic transactions, document management and workflow solutions. Helms took over the reins as Chairman in 2001 and helped stabilize the business which handles more than 60,000 transactions each day, services over 10,000 customers and manages 3 data centers.
Startup Company: MB2x
MB2x builds intuitive and dynamic web based software applications, websites, and mobile apps on the Microsoft stack. They specialize in transforming legacy software and established business processes to new, elegant, powerful and secure web and mobile based applications. MB2X was developed by a husband and wife team in late 2011 with hopes to create a Silicon Valley company right here in Tampa Bay. The company was created on the philosophy of building a talented team, great software and having integrity in all they do. By sticking by their vision of being a great place to work and offering innovative custom software, MB2X will have gained 35 employees, 5 products and revenue of over $10,000,000 by the end of 2013.
5 – 20 Employees: The EyeDoctors
Started in 2007, The EyeDoctors is an optometric office that provides exceptional family eye care for the Greater Tampa Bay area. Located in New Tampa, they are known for their advanced technology and offering of sophisticated tools that other eye care practitioners do not have available. Since opening, the business has grown about 30-40% each year when the national average for revenue growth in an optometry clinic is only 4%. The EyeDoctors mission is to improve lives by improving sight. They achieve this by matching each patient with the right exceptional product and educating the patient to the fullest in a relaxed atmosphere.
21 – 50 Employees: B-AG Contract

51 – 250 Employees: The Woman’s Group, PA
The Woman’s Group was founded in 1998 with a vision to create a practice dedicated to high-quality obstetrical and gynecological care and education for women of all ages. Their values include thorough, high quality and compassionate medical care for their patients in a pleasant, comfortable and friendly environment. Fourteen years later, those guiding principles form the core culture of an organization that now employees 90 women, has 17 top notch practitioners, spans three office locations and serves three area hospitals.
