Florida Speaker of the House Will Weatherford addressed Emerge Tampa Bay and the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce members last night at the Climbing the Capitol event. To the nearly 100 participants in attendance, his message was clear – believe in something and become engaged in the political process. As a young professional himself, he encouraged young professionals to insert themselves in the conversation and begin to make changes that impact their generation. Speaker Weatherford hammered home the fact that it is young professional’s who make the difference in America. They are the ones who have started every movement for change. He stated that “courage is the person who sees what is happening around him and decides to get involved.”
As the youngest Speaker of the House currently serving the U.S., he spoke about his experiences and sacrifices in state politics and his rise through the political ranks to achieve success early in life. Emerge members also had the opportunity to ask questions about his work in the Florida Legislature. One of the Speakers main focuses while in office has been education and how we can improve the educational system in Florida. He touted a system that was more centered on individuals learning needs rather than school grades. He spoke of a new program at the University of Florida that is online driven where students can receive a degree in four months for $10,000. Along with reshaping Florida’s educational system, the Speaker introduced new innovations to the Legislature by creating the first Florida House App for smart phones. It is these strives while he has been Speaker for the past few months that will clearly separate him from others in the years to come.
